As one members of the grading committee said, and also others agreed on that the thesis written was solid, reflective and empirically rich. I do not know if this says more about the choice of opponent or about the author herself. I choose the latter. The atmosphere was as such pleasant and filled with warmth and humour.
And to this end, of course, the discussant also played a pivotal role. When the discussant wanted to welcome Ulrika to the factory of science and gave many useful comments of how she could make her way through this oftenwise instrumentally driven organisation.
So what did he
Inget enkelt samband and what was the dissertation about? The dissertation is a case study of local politics in Malo, Kenya and negotiations and struggle of lans.
Land is not merely, Ulrika explains, merely a property to be owned for this and future generations. Employing, analytically underpinned by a large empirical material, relational property as an analytical category it soon becomes clear that the politics of lans embeds both material and immaterial aspects. Already the opening paragraph, the discussant explain, Inget enkelt samband the tone for a sympathetic take on land politics, as based on personal reflections rather than just analytical categories from the top down.
Is her work political science inspired by ethnography as an academic field or is ethnography actually a fruitful way of doing political science? Which part of the pantheon does she really engage with? Reading the thesis there are obvious sources Inget enkelt samband inspiration deriving from eg.
What is her position? The discussant urged Ulrika to publish her work for a greater audience because very few reads a PhD-thesis anyway and for doing that she needs to more clearly position herself, the discussant added.
Your appearance is there, but Inget enkelt samband slightly disappearing, he said.
Considering this, of course, is to engage with the Kenyan state in both contemporary and historical times. What kind of state is this? Obviously Kenya is not simply a failed or fragile state. But as other states it struggles for recognition and control but it constitutes a nervous environment where institutions and contractual property rights never completely can be trusted. Further policies of land politics, Ulrika explains, causes further struggles sometimes between generations and must be complemented with Inget enkelt samband notions of what constitutes legitimate access to land.
The Kenyan state is in the process of becoming rather than merely being. That is not entirely true, Ulrika explains, think of the Sami people, for instance. In short land politics at the local level in Kenya is actually about high politics. And even if many people would use ethnicity as the tune which you can sing Inget enkelt samband with. But
Inget enkelt samband is not the only possible tune.
Instead of using ethnicity as an analytical tool to investigate local politics in Kenya which is rather futile Ulrika turns to the concept of belonging. I think it is a wise choice. Towards the end the discussant wanted us to return to Durkheim to consider the circularity of time, not only the linearity. The thesis is equipped with both individual and collective stories some would say meta-narratives.
In societies facing ontological uncertainty from multiple angles — security can be found in tales of origin. These stories should not simply be dismissed as narratives sometimes pejoratively mentioned as opposites of truth but as valuable asset for political analysis. And it does certainly enhance our understanding of such a complex phenomenon, such as land reforms in Kenya. I wish to welcome Ulrica to join us in the factory of science.
With her thesis, with an admirable eloquence and a very, very nice performance at the thesis defense today it seems fair to say that Ulrika did a wonderful job today. The approach was really inspiring and encouraging. The important message was that we need to take fuller account of the duties of refugees in our time of tragedy.
This requires a much needed transorfamation of the discussion on the rights to others see eg. Benhabib to the right to ourselves.
A shift of focus. Do you have a moral duty to reside in your original country and thus not escaping to fight structural injustices implemented by eg. The question is if the individual to fulfil his or her contract to the state, if the latter obviously has broken it? Another question which arises from this argument is if the vertical agreement between the state and the individual has been broken, does it still exist a horizontal obligation between peers?
You have a duty to no let your community members behind. To Inget enkelt samband affiliated to home, and share duties, even if you are abroad. When it is safe at home you should return to country of origin.
And furthermore you should also be grateful to what your host country has offered. In sum, you should leave to home as soon as there is a chance. In other words, get the hell out of here and be grateful to what you have been given. If the answers given by the lecturer today was entirely negative against the first two duties. Maybe the third, at least, has a potential for receiving a more affirmative answer.
In other words, you are not entitled to achieve more welfare benefits — you become a burden. This duty says that you have a duty to wait, for instance in a safe third country, if the circumstances for doing so is considered just; ensuring fair responsibility.
If these are not satisfactory enough you have an obligation or a duty to resist these imposed charges against, and this paves the way to a more radical democracy adjusted to the time we are living in. And if not, resist! And you also have a duty Inget enkelt samband testify to the structural imbalances you have faced. Do not toss them oversea. That is the message given by the lecturer and the ethical advice I am transmitting to you.
Neo-liberalism can be many things, oftenwise it connotes to ideology. In general, it is frequently used and talked about pejoratively, as something superficial and lacking nuances. The areas of social exclusion and unemployment are not merely linked to old national welfare, but shows many local manifestations of something which are greater all-European concerns.
It is a meta-rationality. From this dominant logic, discrimination is dealt with by compensatory measures and unemployment is frequently coupled immigration.
Some of her Inget enkelt samband will
Inget enkelt samband discussed in this post further down. In the dissertation, Malin shows the framing of the funds in both discursive, calculative and visual practices. She does a multi-sited ethnography, but does not conduct any interviews with eg. A key word in her dissertation is social magic from Judith Butler and the normative ambitions are inspired by among others Nancy Fraser. And of course also govermentality and Michel Foucault.
And also the famous question posed by Bacchi: If this is the solution, when what is the problem? Of crucial importance, I reckon, is the initial criticism of the ESF projects of wanting to help people who cannot help themselves.
Then a lot of researcher are sent to eg. But what if these people, their experiences, are not only objects of your research but yet part of your own personal "Inget enkelt samband"
This critical observation provides you with a slightly different angle and who wants to be declared as someone who needs to be helped? Where is the agency?
With provocative clarity the dissertation finds out that the project-making of the ESF European Social Funds represents a catwalk. In order to attract more money you display happiness on stage. In order to be recognized you have to visible. And in being on display you should "Inget enkelt samband" as successful as possible. Come on stupid, put a on your face!
We can go on. But I stop here.
And the discussion which the opponent initiated was profound and massive. Malin Inget enkelt samband with both humour and intellectual sharpness. She has done a fabolous job and I wish her all the best. Read more about her dissertation, for instance, here in Swedish: I detta nu disputerade Mats Fred med avhandlingen: Huvudhandledare var Patrik Hall och opponenten var Stig Montin.
Grattis till avhandlingen, Mats! Vi har en confirmation bias. Jag tror inte det. To conclude, the discussant mentioned four aspects: Duty to leave When it is safe at home you should return to
Inget enkelt samband country of origin.
Duty to wait If the answers given by the lecturer today was entirely negative against the first two duties. She also concludes that: ESF crafts employability and is as such a modernity project, depicting the ethnic other who is both a condition for the project as such but also outside the current borders of normality.
She plays with the distinction between doing good and doing good business. Numbers of social exclusion are translated into actual social exclusion.
